Turkish is the official language of Turkey and one of the official languages of Cyprus. The Turkish language is spoken by about 55 million people in Turkey and another million in Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus and Macedonia. Turkish is characterized by vowel harmony and agglutination. Turkish has no grammatical gender. Turkish is the major member of the Turkic language family, which is a subfamily of the Altaic languages. However, the vast majority of the linguistic minorities in Turkey are bilingual, speaking Turkish as a second language to levels of native fluency.
