The INDONESIAN Language: The official language of Indonesia is Bahasa Indonesia also known as Indonesian. However, there are 583 recognized languages and dialects throughout the country. English is the predominant language for travel and business and Dutch and French are widely spoken in urban areas. Indonesian is based on classical Malay and has existed for 70 years and is still in the process of developoing. Many English words have been incorporated into the vocabulary. Indonesian is written in Roman letters but the roots of some words are Sanskrit, reflecting the islands' Hindu-Buddhist history before the coming of Islam in the 13th century.
