Recently I read a book by Thomas L. Friedman called “The World is Flat.” It is a very interesting book about how the world is changing and how the interaction between people, cultures, and languages is affecting our lives today and how it will continue to affect all of our lives now and in the future.
My reading left me with a deep impression of how fast our world is changing and how important our communications with others who speak different languages can be.
Not long ago I traveled to Hong Kong and then to mainland China. These areas are an entrepreneur’s dream. I was totally fascinated with the culture, the people and all of their goods. My mind was totally stimulated over what could be done by marketing various products and the opportunities that they offered.
I had a young Chinese man who traveled with me who spoke fluent English. This enabled me to do the business I went there to accomplish and saved a lot of time. Because of his language skills I always knew what was going on, how and where to travel, what to eat, and where to stay. It turned out to be a wonderful and successful trip because of his language skills
WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE MORE MONEY
Think about it! There are 1000’s of ways to increase your income. First you need an idea or let’s say a goal. This is only one simple way to do something to help you make more money and increase your job security.
STEPS FOR SUCCESS
- Pick a language you want to learn
- Look around for opportunities where you live
- Set your goal for the type of job you want to have
- Learn the language that you have chosen
- Pick out a number of companies you want to interview with
- Take a job that fits your goal
PICK A LANGUAGE YOU WANT TO LEARN
You may have a language you have secretly wanted to learn. You may come through a family that has it roots from Germany, Italy, China, Japan, Portugal, or Mexico. You may think French is a great language. There may be a dozen reasons for you to learn a certain language. Pick one that you are motivated to learn.
WHERE ARE THE OPPORTUNITIES
Your new language can certainly be of interest to a business in tourism. A friend of mine decided that she would like to be a stewardess for a major airline. This was after she had her family raised. She knew English and also Finnish but felt that she needed at least another language to get the job. So she learned Russian. She got her job with American Airlines. While she was a stewardess she also learned French. She never had to worry about job security. She always had a job with no worries. She did this job for 10 years and retired after she had locked in her flying privileges for the rest of her life. This is just one example.
A man I know learned Japanese and got an important job with an international bank that needed someone who could communicate with their clients in Japan. Chad Lewis, an NFL football player learned Mandarin Chinese and has been able to do things with the NFL helping to arrange games in China and has gained a lot of notoriety through this alone and outside of football.
You may want to work at a grocery store that services a lot of Mexican customers who speak very little English.
There are many, many opportunities out there for you. It may be in a bank, an automobile company, in electronics, at a law office and on and on and on.
Just look around for what you would like to do.
In most situations by knowing two or more languages you will command a larger pay check. This also works for people coming to an English speaking country. If a Chinese, Mexican, or Brazilian person would learn English along with their native language they would be able to make a lot more money in their jobs.
It makes a difference when you can communicate with those people a business serves.
LEARN A LANGUAGE
To learn a language you must first decide which one you want to learn. Get yourself a language course that fits your needs. You can be learning a language while you are driving your car, walking, jogging, exercising, eating, or sitting at a computer.
I have been learning Spanish. Each lesson is 30 minutes long. I do this while I am walking on a tread mill. This is easier for me because I find that while I am exercising I would much rather be learning something than watching the TV. So in the same time that I am exercising for 30 minutes I am going over my language lesson. I “kill two birds with one stone” in a way.
It takes time and dedication to accomplish learning anything. But this is something you can do while you are doing something else. You can learn simple phrases the very first day.
Your goal for the amount of proficiency that you will need for your new employment goal will determine the effort and the amount of time that it will take you to get to where you want to be.
PICK OUT SOME COMPANIES TO INTERVIEW WITH
After you become proficient in your new language, pick out a few companies to go and interview with. Don’t become discouraged when one does not work out. You can get better at interviewing with each new company you talk to. Keep your goal in mind and you will get some offers to consider.
TAKE A JOB THAT FITS YOUR GOAL
Make sure that you pick your opportunity for a new job wisely. What are the income possibilities? What are the possibilities for advancement? Is this a career opportunity?
You will find that learning a new language will open up a whole new world to you. It is fun and rewarding.
